A new software application from simulator supplier Cruden improves the feeling of road surface to tire 

Simulators play a vital role in engineering in the automotive industry. This is no longer limited to large OEMs, but is also the case for tire manufacturers, suppliers as well as academic organizations. Cruden develops motion-based simulators for various applications.

Thanks to lidar scanning techniques, 64bit computing, increased expertise and new levels of automation to process all the data, it is now more affordable and practical for OEMs to test their vehicle and tire models in the simulator, using a very meaningful and accurate model of their local road test route.

Cruden’s mathematicians are at the forefront of methods designed to deal with the new scale of available data, building algorithms to process 3D models of lengthy road test routes, based on scans of the surface down to less than 1mm accuracy in road height.

The most crucial part of road modeling is the feeling the driver gets from the interaction between the road surface and the tires, affected by the penetration depth of the tread with respect to the tire and the relative position of the contact patch with respect to the wheel as the tire runs over the road.

This is where SISTer (Server for Interaction with Surfaces and Terrains) comes in. This new software application from Cruden is programmed to determine how the tire-road contact patch is deformed, replacing the single-point tire contact patch with multiple points.

It provides highly improved input to the tire model, resulting in far more detailed and precise forces and moments plus road-normal calculations.

Working with any combination of vehicle and tire model in real time, SISTer is a separate process that frees the vehicle model from the computational load associated with evaluating 3D scanned surfaces. SISTer works out of the box with any vehicle simulation that has Simulink connectivity.
